Co-phasing Quads? Try the G-28000DXC!

Given the overwhelming response by users of ‘11m DX Activities Oz’ to our forum topic on polarisation, this next product review is sure to have you taking a break from the mic for a squiz and a few comments. Without doubt, the buzzwords in the 11m DX World at the moment appear to be ‘quads’ and ‘co-phasing’. But to do this successfully one must also use a high powered rotator — especially when you consider the enormous weight of the antenna/ s to be shifted.

Undoubtedly one of the best rotators available in the modern day communications market is the G-2800DXC by Yaesu. Weighing at just 3.5kg, this model rotator is ideal for extra-heavy-duty antenna installations such as a 6 element beam or a pair of co-phased yagis or quads. To quote a radio mate of mine, “It handles my 6 element like a piece of piss!”

With a total rotation range of 450 degrees with presets, the G-2800DXC includes ‘Auto Slow Start’ and ‘Auto Slow Stop’ features to avoid sharp jolts to the antenna array and tower. The G-2800DXC package also includes a rugged mast clamp and 40 metres of control cable for easy installation.

Final Wrap

In addition to the free mast clamp and 40 metres of cable, I like the fact that the lower mast clamps are separate and connected by bolts. The only concern I have is that the mast brackets are cast aluminium. As such, there is a warning about torking them too tight and what order to tighten them in. If one of these snaps, I don’t know for sure but I’m thinking that you can order them from Yaesu which could take some time if you’re based in 43 Division as they would most likely have to ship some over from the United States.

Importantly, the remote box is quite modern looking and looks awesome next to the transceiver. I also like the slim-line body that makes it fit my rotor plate without problems.

For those interested in purchasing one of these high powered rotators, Andrews Communications in Sydney currently lists the G-28000DXC at $1999.00 AUD. You can also pick one up from Doug at Oz Gear in Brisbane.
