*Coming Soon* 2010 Oceania Contest

Admin 3's picture

The world’s best on-line DX magazine, 11m DX Activities Oz, is proud to announce the dates of its 2010 Oceania Contest. Undoubtedly the most exciting and best supported contest on the eleven meter band, the 2010 Oceania Contest will commence on January 1 with the aim being to make as many contacts with Oceania DXCC as possible over 2 long weekends.

As always, a number of high profile communications retail outlets have volunteered to sponsor the event in the form of some outstanding prizes for placegetters. Dave and Mike from Yeti Communications, for example, will continue their generous support of the OC Contest by way of donating one of its brand new super rigs — especially designed for the professional eleven meter band DXer — as a prize. Jos Hanhn from Syncro is back on board in 2010 again too, throwing bucket loads of prizes at the event to show HIS company's support for OC DXers! There's also a major prize offered by Dave Cox and the crew at Radio Warehouse Australia up for grabs to tickle the fancy of serious 11m contesters!

The rules for January 2010 remain the same as this year’s event and are designed to provide fair and equal access to all. Please read them carefully — particularly how scoring works for you, depending on YOUR geographical location (OC or NON-OC). If you have any questions, please add a comment to this story or email me direct.

On behalf of the Admin Team, good luck!

SCORING

For Oceania Transmitting Stations:

* Each contact with a station in your own DXCC is worth 1 point
* Each contact with an OC transmitting station outside your DXCC is worth 1 point
* Each contact made with a non-OC transmitting station [Example: A station in EU or the Americas] is worth 3 points
* Only one contact per station on each weekend will count in final points score
[NOTE: It is possible to work the same station on 2 occasions during the Contest providing it is on different weekends]
* At the conclusion of the contest, each DXCC worked adds 3 points onto your TOTAL points score [Example: 43 SE 144 Peter works 43, 9, 2, 41, 172 and 224 = 6 DXCC = 18 points]
* Points are then multiplied by the number of OC DXCC worked (Not OC stations worked) to give a FINAL points score.

For Outside Oceania Transmitting Stations:

* Each contact with an OC transmitting station is worth 3 points and counts as 1 multiplier [IMPORTANT NOTE: No more than 2 multipliers per OC DXCC will count] [Example: if you work 2 x 43 division stations, total = 6 points + 2 multipliers) [If you work 10 x 43 division stations, total = 30 points + 2 multipliers]
* Only one contact per station on each weekend will count in final points score [NOTE: It is possible to work the same station on 2 occasions during the Contest providing it is on different weekends]
* Each contact made with a non-OC transmitting station is worth 1 point
* Contacts are possible within your own DXCC and are worth 1 point
* At the conclusion of the contest, each DXCC worked = 3 points onto TOTAL points score [Example: 14 FR 003 works 14, 161, 26, 41, 43, 47, 13 and 2 = 8 DXCC = 24 points]
* Points are then multiplied by the number of OC stations worked (Not OC DXCC) (Limit of 2 multipliers per OC DXCC) to give a FINAL points score.

[IMPORTANT: To be eligible for final placings, including prizes, in the Single Operator Category, an outside of OC transmitting station MUST have worked at least 1 x OC transmitting station].

RESULTS

* Will be published on 11m DX Activities Oz and on the web sites of supporting DX Groups/CB Clubs/Organisations
* Any further enquiries should be directed to the Contest Manager via the above email address or by posting comments on www.11mdxactivitiesoz.com

Just an Observation...

G'day & HNY to all.
To me,the idea of issuing progressive numbers for the contest on the 40 chl block ,rings a bit 'hollow' to me.
My reasons are.
1- A lot of the people that take part in this great contest ,seem to monitor 450 -650 section of the band.
So dishing out progressives on the 40 channels by the dozen ,to me seems an unfair advantage..Unless the 555 part of the band's open.
2- Without sounding snobbish, how many people on 355 would know about Dxpeditions,Progressives, etc?.
I tried to issue one on 365 last year ,& was asked 'what's a progressive number?.Just 'wind it up there go' (cringe).
I stopped that idea pretty fast lol.
As we know,it's a different world above 405.

Just an my obervation for any discussion...

Gday Brett, Dereck and all I

Gday Brett, Dereck and all

I am one of the operators that operate on the 40ch block and on 555 etc.
Currently the rules state that you are able to operate 26-28 mhz all modes.. so for this competition I will still work all stations who are interested in Qsoing with me.. If the rules change to above 27.405 and below 26.965 mhz..then I will abide by those rules.

I do not see it as an unfair advantage because it is in the rules of the competition. I do not just hand out a no. I explain the comp, even give them a link to the site here if they are interested. I even qso with them for a fair while..just because that is what I do.. which means I will never get a massive amount of contacts. An amazing lot of people are truly interested.. and most are very surprised they have never heard of the competition. I have been abused.. but whats new in that. I put a short call and qsy freq and those who are interested come down.

Maybe if more operators used the 40ch block, and explained what they were doing.. more people would understand what was going on.. the competition is open to all..

Another issue, is for legal reasons I doubt Darren (11m DX oz) is able to advertise/promote for Aus operators to operate solely out of band

just my 2c worth.

cheers and good luck in the comp.

Hey Dan

Just an addition to the legal reasons as mentioned in your post

11m DX OZ nor anyone would even tell people to operate illegally (not that it's monitored anyway) Hence the reason most QSL cards these days have "Band" or "MHZ" other than "Freq"

The big groups for years have entertained this very little handy comment within their web pages and directories also....

VERY IMPORTANT WARNING
Please use your RX/TX only according local radio regulations

Point Taken Dan

Absolutley Dan...The rules state it's from 26-28mhz.And rules are rules.
I think without Darren saying it ...Due to legalities(if it's even policed anymore ??).The contest ,like the AT,SD, IR DX,etc contests,is more aimed at the freeband section of 11 metres .Even though it says it's from 26-28mhz.Maybe they do this to escape the 'good buddy' element on legal 40 chls.
Have fun anyway Dan & all the best in it.

A Thought For The Future

Whether this falls on deaf ears remains to be seen, but Brett I agree 100% with your view on the 40ch block.

26.965 - 27.405 should not be used in any of these contests whatsoever.

The average CB op wouldn't have the slightest idea what a progressive number was or what it is used for.

Can you imagine the operators from 224 trying to explain to these "good budgies" who their QSL Manager is and the fact they have to include contribution for a return QSL card.

So here's a thought for 2011.....

1. Frequency allocations for above 27.405 to be implemented.

2. Drop the progressive number system, it's so "old school".

My reason for saying number 2 is quite simple, I listened to an Australian operator work a station in Central America during the OC contest ok. He gave the CA station a report of 4/1 with lots of QSB & QRN and spent 3 mins trying to get the callsign of the operator he was working (why he didn't listen first before calling was beyond me) and then proceeded to issue a progressive number to a station he could barely hear.

I think this is grounds for the removal of the progressive number system, it's had its time over the years and it's time to change with the rest of the world. Why not use the log system?? The logs are all checked when submitted so why even bother with a progressive number. It's one less thing for the contesting station to worry about.....you're in the log 73's, QRZ!

...and why number 1? Simple, keep everything on a level playing field and avoid the "wind it up there go!" syndrome.

Plus....everything these days seems to be centred around the AT rules etc etc

I don't speak on behalf of the group nor do I preach the rules that come with it, but if you're going to run a contest like the OC and base it on the "big boys rules" then it's time to set things straight.

Only contacts above 405 are valid. Brett I think even you can back me up on this, it was a rule in my day and still stands today as far as I'm aware

So there ya have it, my 2 cents worth on the subject

If you're going to have a contest such as this, then it's time to play by the big boy rules and ask yourself.....are you a "freebander" or a "good budgie"

40 Channels

G'day Derek & HNY mate.
I think AT may have changed the rules & included the 40 Chl block. Why i don't know.Looking at the SD contest rules,as well as many others, they say 26-28 Mhz ,all modes nowdays..BUT ,common sense would prevail ,& you'd stay off the 26.965-27.405 section.
Please understand ,there's still some good op's on 27.355,& more so on 27.155 lsb ( The official CB SSB Call Frequency in 43 for our overseas friends), that avoid 355 like the proverbial plague. It's such a shame that these other foulmouth inbreds have come on 355 & are destroying a good 'gentlemans agreement' call frequency, which it has been ever since i've been on the radio.
Derek's right in saying ,half the op's on the 40 Chls would have NO idea what your'e talking about ,with Contests & progressives etc.( i also agree that in poor conditions, the 'In the Log's system's easier.
As i said ,it's a different thing all together on the 555 section of 11 meters. You get the odd operator coming up from 355 saying 'c'mon 555 wind those plastic radios up c'mom c'mon'(yes i 've heard it with my own ears lol). They either get ignored or very quickly told the error of their ways...hi hi.
The Oceania Contest is a great contest & i love going in it.But it's only a new contest & like some new things,a bit of fine tuning regarding frequency allocation MAY be needed.
Just my take on it.

Cheers Brett

Thanks for the update Brett, guess I'm still "old school"

Wasn't aware of the 26-28mhz frequency allocation for all contests these days.

Quite a shame really that these weren't the allocations when we contested 10+ years ago, we could've worked a bucket load of stations from 41 div on 26.720 (NZ's 35)

If I remember correctly the frequency allocation was from 27.415 - 27.855 only

My how things change.....

73's and good luck to those in this years OC Contest

Good luck in the Contest

Hello everyone,

I'd like to wish everyone the best of luck in the Oceania Contest. I hope to work as many of you guys as possible and a few of the guys in the OC area too (New Caledonia, New Zealand, etc.). The last couple of years, I have been active mostly within the legal frequency allocation (26.965 MHz - 27.405) and I think I will operate the same again this year for the majority.

This year I have a new monoband antenna made for 10m which tunes up well for 11m so I am sure I will be heard.

Have fun and thanks to Darren, Frank and the sponsors for making it possible.

Regards,

Pete

2010 Ocenia 11m Comp

Hi Darren and all 11m DXer's

I am hoping to get the time off to have another go at the Oceania comp for 2010. I had a great time last year and with the steady improvements in DX over this year, if the Band opens up at the right time, it's going to be an exciting one.
